Choosing blades? Start with our complete rotavator blade guide — L vs C vs J vs straight, steel and hardness compared.
Walk into many tractor-parts shops and you will see bright gold, silver or rainbow-coloured blades sold as "titanium" or "coated" rotavator blades. They look premium and often cost more. Farmers ask us a fair question: are titanium-coated rotavator blades really better? This guide explains what a coating can and cannot do, so you can spend your money on what actually makes a blade last.
For a full comparison of blade shapes, steel and hardness, start with our rotavator blade guide. Here we look only at coatings and finishes.
What "titanium-coated" usually means
The word "titanium" on a blade usually refers to a thin surface finish, not to the blade being made of titanium. The finish might be a hard coating, a plating or a coloured paint or powder coat. The body of the blade underneath is still steel. A shop label rarely tells you which type of finish it is, and the colour alone cannot tell you either.
So the first point to remember is simple: the colour is the outside; the steel is the blade.
Why a coating wears off fast in soil
A rotavator blade works in one of the harshest conditions on the farm. It hits soil, sand, stones and roots hundreds of times a minute. Any surface finish, however hard, is very thin compared with the blade. The cutting edge and the tip see the most abrasion, so the finish there is the first to go, often within the first hours of work. After that, the part of the blade doing the cutting is bare steel.
That means the speed at which your blade wears, bends or holds its edge is decided by the steel and its heat treatment, not by the coating. Our post on rotavator blade wear patterns shows how edge wear develops in different soils.
What a coating can do
- Slow rust in storage. A good coating or paint protects blades sitting in a shop, a godown or a shed.
- Look good on the counter. A clean finish helps a dealer display and sell blades.
- Help identify a brand. A consistent colour can help buyers recognise a product, though colours are easy to copy.
What a coating cannot do
- It cannot turn weak or poorly hardened steel into a long-life blade.
- It cannot stop a blade from bending if the core is too soft, or from snapping if it is too brittle.
- It cannot hide a bad bend, off-centre holes or uneven weight once the blade is on the rotor.
If a blade bends in the first week, the coating will not save it. Our guide on why rotavator blades bend or break explains the real causes.
What actually decides blade life
1. Steel grade
The alloy sets how well the blade can be hardened while staying tough. BHUMI KING ITALY and OSCAR blades are made from 30MnCrB5 boron steel. Read more on our steel page.
2. Forging and shape
A properly forged blade has a clean, even bend and correct hole positions, so it sits firmly on the flange and cuts evenly.
3. Heat treatment
Quenching and tempering give the blade its working hardness through the steel, not just on the surface. Our blades are hardened to 48–52 HRC. Our post on heat treatment explains why this balance matters, and the HRC hardness guide shows how to read the number.
Coated blade or plain painted blade: how to choose
If two blades have the same steel grade, hardness and build quality, the finish is a small difference that mostly affects storage and appearance. If one is coated but the seller cannot tell you its steel or hardness, and the other has a stated grade and HRC range, the second is the safer buy. Pay for the steel, not for the shine.
Questions to ask at the counter
- What exactly is this coating or finish?
- What steel grade is the blade made from?
- What is the hardness range in HRC?
- Is the blade forged and heat-treated?
- Who is the manufacturer, and where is it made?
Clear answers are a good sign. Vague answers that only talk about colour are not. Our guide on how to identify genuine rotavator blades adds more checks.
Looking after any blade finish
Whatever the finish, blades last longer with simple care. Wash off mud after the season, dry them, apply a light coat of oil and store them off the ground. Our storage and rust prevention guide covers the details.
Frequently asked questions
Are titanium-coated rotavator blades better?
A coating can improve looks and give some rust protection in storage, but it is a very thin surface layer. In soil it wears off quickly at the cutting edge. Blade life depends mainly on the steel grade, forging and heat treatment underneath, so judge the blade by those, not by its colour.
Is a gold or golden rotavator blade made of titanium?
Not necessarily. A gold colour can come from a coating, plating or paint. The colour alone does not tell you the material or the hardness. Ask the seller for the steel grade and hardness range in writing.
Does coating make a rotavator blade harder?
A hard coating may be hard on the surface, but it is far too thin to change how the blade wears in soil once the edge breaks through. The working hardness comes from the heat-treated steel. For example, BHUMI KING ITALY and OSCAR blades are 30MnCrB5 boron steel hardened to 48–52 HRC.
Do coated blades rust less?
A good coating or paint can slow rust while blades sit in a shop or shed. Once the blade has worked in soil, the edge is bare steel again. Clean, oil and store blades properly between seasons whatever the finish.
What should I ask before buying coated blades?
Ask what the coating is, the steel grade, the hardness range, and whether the blades are forged and heat-treated. If the seller only talks about colour and shine, treat it as a warning sign.
